Meskerem Mees (• 1999) is a Belgian-Ethiopian singer-songwriter based in Brussels. With her dreamy music, poetic lyrics and remarkable versatility, she captivates audiences across Europe and beyond.
Her debutalbum Julius (2021) is characterised by a charmingly naïve sound, heavily contrasted by intensely contemplative and sometimes dark lyrics. It marked the starting point of her professional career and earned her both the Music Moves Europe Award and the Montreux Jazz Talent Award.
In 2022, she released Caesar, an eight-track EP that dives deeper into the world she built around Julius. In 2023, she was invited to compose music alongside Jean-Marie Aerts (†) and Carlos Garbin for EXIT ABOVE, a production directed and choreographed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. This collaboration allowed her to engage with audiences in a new way: freed from the constraints of her guitar and challenged by a much larger stage, which she was encouraged to explore alongside Belgium’s most renowned contemporary dance company, Rosas.
She also collaborated with contemporary music ensemble Ictus, Zefiro Torna andclassical soprano Lore Binon on Yule!, a winter solstice showblending baroque, medieval and contemporary music.
In 2025, she finds herself composing a choral piece in collaboration with Bozar, as well as scoring her first TV series.
Meskerem Mees proves time and again that her creativity has no limits. Whether she is singing, writing or dancing, she does so with clarity, focus and an endless curiosity.
